Abstract Aiming at underwater near-field target localization and recognition, a small-sized underwater near-field target acoustic detection system was designed. The system adopts the operation mode that active ranging sonar techniques and target passive DOA estimation using cross array. In order to validate the feasibility of the sonar system design, a set of water-tank experimental scheme is designed for the direction finding of underwater target. The purpose of the experiment is to realize underwater acoustic signal acquisition and processing conveniently by means of LabVIEW and MATLAB. The former is easy to data gathering and saving function, and the latter possess powerful simulation of algorithms. The experimental results offer reference for suitable types of arrays and related algorithms selection.
