Abstract According to definitions of the new operational radiation quantities for area monitoring recommended by the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) report, a cylindrical ambient dose equivalent ionization chamber is designed and preliminary studied.The results show that the effect by the material and the size of the collector to the energy response is not obvious,energy response characteristic of the aluminum ionization chamber is better than that of the plexiglass.Through the theoretical calculation and geometry optimization,the cylindrical ambient dose equivalent ionization chamber made from plexiglass as a shell and lined with an appropriate thickness of the aluminum layer will get a better energy response curve.
