Abstract In order to solve the metrological traceability of Lovibond color system, a spectro-photometric method is proposed to study the Lovibond color system. The analysis of experimental data shows that there is an obvious linear relationship between the spectral density and the Lovibond number at single wavelength, in the wavelength range of 380~780nm, the relationship between the integral optical density and the number of Lovibond is also obvious. The reliability of the relationship is verified by the data provided by the American Oil Chemists Society.
